One important thing was ommitted: cost of spay and neuter. Price varies by size and condition of dog, region, and clinic. It is something that cannot be skipped, and it saves thousands of dollars in the long run. An unspayed dogs costs much more to care for, as there is a higher liklihood of having to treat certain cancers, treating injuries that occur through getting into scraps with other dogs and cats, replacing or cleaning household items if the dog goes into heat and of course, paying through the nose to take care of pups if that should happen.

Some people don't think about this because dogs from rescues are already spayed, but if you pick up your dog from some county pounds or take one from a private individual who can no longer care for their dog, its something that needs to be factored in.

Another consideration is putting money aside for emergencies in case the unthinkable should happen and your dog should get sick.
