The biggest consideration in selecting a dog when you have children is not all about the breed. There are some Golden Retrievers who are terrible with children and small dogs who love them. It is about the individual dog, their temperment, and personality.

Also, and this cannot be overlooked is the actual children. THEIR personalities, energy levels, and their abilities to understand and follow rules is critical.

If your children are raised to respect animals, that they need "alone time" too, to not run behind them and "grab them" and handle them with care, they would be able to be friends with a wider range of dogs than children who are not good listeners, act out more than typical for their age, or are poorly parented (the parents don't have any semblance of rules or boundaries in their home).

There are no absolutes. Some families with children should NOT have a dog in the first place of any type, and thre are people with small children who are good matches for dogs you wouldn't imagine they would be.
