What are, and How to Express a Dogs Anal Glands
What exactly are anal glands?
We’ve all seen dogs, when meeting up with another of their kind, sniffing each others tale ends. This is because there are two small glands or sacs on either side your dogs rectal opening which secrete his or her own personal scent (contrary to what my family jokes about, the scent isn’t really what was for dinner last night!). The secretion, something like the consistency of oil, is very stinky to humans – so don’t get close to it.
Should I be concerned about my dogs anal glands?
For all practical purposes… no.. we really don’t need to bother with expressing these glands. However, some dogs do have issues – see your dog doing the “butt scoot” across the lawn or carpet, you may need to take your dog to the vet to be sure.
Can I see the glands just by looking?
Possibly…. the glands are located at about the 5 o’clock and 7 o’clock locations just on either side of the anal opening. If you look closely, you may be able to see a small opening on either side.. but again, a word of caution – stay out of the line of fire if you plan to express them! This is not something you want on you!
How do I express my dogs anal glands myself?
Because this such stinky business, it’s recommended to do this at bath time. Place a finger and thumb on either side of the glands and press towards the rectum – pressing up and inward should release the fluid. If you are unable to express fluid, it’s possible you’ll need your vets assistance.
Your vet will express the glands for you. Another option if you take your dog to a groomer, s/he should have experience in expressing anal glands also, just ask them.
